Windows Server Replacements

We have just begun to hear from Microsoft that we should upgrade to 64 bit architecture when next we purchase server hardware. Expect this to continue over the next few years as Microsoft prepares us for the end of 32 bit computing for servers. If you have a Small Business Server it means you will need to pay attention when upgrading starting now.

Windows Server 2003 packages will have mainstream support until 2009. The 2000 packages are on extended support until 2011. So there is time. But you should consider upgrading to 64 bit hardware if you have a significant failure. And Microsoft gives some good reasons to do so for those operating the Enterprise versions of the software. For small shops, the reasons may sound hollow.

A very good report on the slow uptake of the new 64 bit operating systems amoung IT Pros is available at searchwinit.com. In the article they discuss why some will and others will not upgrade soon. But rest assured, the days of 32 bit servers are numbered.
