To Delaware’s Business Community and Citizens: A Special Message from Delaware Secretary of State Jeffrey W. Bullock
Dear Friends:
Japan is going through a devastating crisis; the people of Japan have already faced a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami and they are now facing a significant nuclear threat. The Miyagi Prefecture, a state about the size of Delaware on the north east coast of Japan, has been hit the worst by these events as their coast line faces the epicenter of the quake. Miyagi Prefecture also is the State of Delaware’s sister-state, an informal relationship that began under Governor Castle and was formalized by Governor Carper in 1997.
The people of Delaware and Miyagi have built lasting and meaningful friendships over the years. Our businesses have worked together to help expand our markets and employ more people, both in Delaware and Miyagi. Parents from Delaware and Miyagi have hosted our children, taking them in as our own. Teachers and classmates from both states have helped our students understand each of our cultures and each other as mentors and friends.
People across Delaware are responding with compassion and support. To ensure that Delaware donations reach the people of Miyagi, we have set up a fund through the Delaware Community Foundation. Please visit www.delaware.gov/HelpMiyagi or click the “Help Miyagi” button on the Division of Corporations’ website where you can donate to the fund, named the “Delaware Fund for Miyagi, Japan.” Any amount you or your business can give is appreciated. Donations are tax deductible.
Please also let us know through the Help Miyagi website what you or your business may be doing for the relief and rebuilding effort so that we may be able to help cross-promote these efforts and ensure you are recognized for your hard work.
Further, please consider joining Governor and Mrs. Markell, Lt. Governor Denn, and the leadership of Delaware’s General Assembly on Thursday, April 14th for a luncheon fundraiser at Dover Downs (details and invitation below) or contact us if you would like to help with this event. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey W. Bullock
