The Open Data Movement
Open data is the idea that certain data collected or generated by governments should be freely available to the public for any purpose, without any restrictions on use or republication. While certain government records have long been freely accessible, they have traditionally required a trip to the local government office where the records were kept. With the rise of the Internet, and the push toward digitization of government records and other information generated by governments, “open data” initiatives have begun to take root, both inside governments and in private groups seeking access to government data.
