Sign Up for Vehicle Renewal Reminder Notices

Dover — The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announces that it will issue e-mail and telephone vehicle registration renewal reminders as of January 1, 2009. The Division will no longer mail paper vehicle renewal notices, which will save approximately $130,000 a year. Mail-in registration renewal notifications for vehicles that are not required to be inspected shall continue to be mailed out to customers, with the exception of those who provide an e-mail or telephone number upon request.
The DMV has already begun accepting e-mail and telephone information from walk-in customers, and customers provide this information online by going to the DMV Web site at www.dmv.de.gov This new process is estimated to save the DMV, a division of the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) approximately $130,000 a year and is a continuance of the DMV’s efforts to offer its services on-line for the convenience of Delaware citizens and to continue its focus on efficiency.
The reason for the change is that of the estimated 33,000 vehicle renewal notices sent out monthly, approximately 30 percent come back to DMV because of customer address changes which results in a waste of taxpayer dollars. This change will also result in the reduction of over 350,000 printed pages and envelopes.
DMV also wants to remind the public that it is required by law that vehicle owners provide change of addresses to DMV within 30 days of any such change. However, officials note that the majorityof vehicle owners either ignore or are not aware of this requirement.
DMV has also initiated many other new online customer service features on its Web site, including:
* A fee calculator
* Specially designed vanity tag research option
* Administrative Hearing request application.
* Ability to purchase a limited edition Centennial Plate online
