Security revisited

Since Russ is so busy right now, I volunteered to share some of my posts for a few weeks. Thanks Russ for letting me help out.

We all know the responsibility for our online data increases along with increases in connectivity. Microsoft has felt the sting of some spectacular security holes in the past and now is looking to help you fight back. Microsoft includes data collaboration tools in every server package it sells. While many turn these features off, that does not cure all security ills.

Do you keep information on a server that COULD access the internet?
Do you allow employees to connect remotely?
How about any data collaboration tools your employees use on the desktop?
Then there are the good old fashion ways people lose data; theft and carelessness.

Microsoft has updated its’ security toolkit and guide to help keep your employees up to date on security measures. The toolkit is a 120 MB download that includes a white paper and templates for many of the items you will need to train your employees.

• Brochure Templates

• E-Mail Invite Template

• Fact Sheet Templates

• FAQs

• Newsletter Template

• Poster Templates

• PowerPoint Templates

• Quick Reference Card

Many of these are items you would not think are part of your security plan and they remind you that security is a shared responsibility. You, your employees and your software/hardware vendors must all play a part.

In the worst case scenario of data loss your organization will at least look better if you go through this program. That in itself may lessen damages resulting from perceived negligence.
