Newark Meeting Renewable Energy Targets
The City of Newark currently gets about 4% of its’ electricity from renewable sources. The State Legislature has set Renewable Energy Portfolio Standards that ratchet up every year. The mandated percentage for 2009 is 4%. If the Blue Water Wind project goes through as planned, the City of Newark’s new contract with them would raise the renewable percentage to near 19%.
The City Electric Department is excited about the recent additional commitment by the City to the Blue Water Wind project. Newark is in the middle of evaluating it’s recycling, conservation and green provisioning policies.
