Josh Shannon Speaks on Multimedia Reporting in the Digital Age – Delaware Press Association Welcomes Communicators to Open Meeting
(March 27, 2013—Wilmington, DE) Delaware Press Association invites communications professionals and members of the public to take part in More Than Just Words: Multimedia Reporting in the Digital Age on Wednesday, April 3, 2013. Josh Shannon, Editor of the Newark Post, creates multimedia packages and reports from the field, and will talk about his role, the tools of his field, and give tips to communicators in all industries. The event begins with networking at 5:30 p.m. at Klondike Kate’s 156 East Main Street, Newark, Delaware, followed by a program beginning at 7:00 p.m. The cost is $15 and includes access to a buffet of appetizers; cash bar is available. Members and non-members are asked to register in advance by visiting http://dpa-april2013.eventbrite.com/#
A Newark native, Josh Shannon was named editor of the Newark Post in January 2013. He also serves as digital editor for the Newark Post and its sister papers, the Cecil Whig in Elkton, Md., and the Avenue News in Essex, Md. He runs the day-to-day operations of the papers’ websites, trains reporters in multimedia skills and grows all three papers’ online and social media presences. He will talk about the role of a digital editor, demonstrate some of the tools of a digital reporter and discuss easy ways for other journalists to improve their multimedia skills, followed by a question and answer period.
Shannon is a 2011 graduate of the University of Delaware, where he worked for the student-run newspaper, The Review, for four years, including two years as editor-in-chief. He began freelancing for the Newark Post as a sophomore in college and upon graduation was hired as a staff reporter for the Cecil Whig.
He was part of the iPad Digital Reporter Project, sponsored by American Consolidated Media, and is responsible for training reporters on multimedia skills. Scott Wright of ACM says the goal of this kind of reporting, which can be evaluated day-to-day based on “page views and newspaper subscription and advertising purchases,” is “to provide the content the community wants and to make sure cash registers of our advertisers are ringing.” A win-win situation for today’s newspapers.
Shannon says, “I believe that a journalist’s job is to tell as complete a story as possible, which often includes more than just written words. Whenever I go out on an assignment, I take my camera, iPad and voice recorder so I can produce multimedia packages as well. Though journalism is without a doubt changing, I believe the need for quality reporting will never go away. While I remain a print journalist at heart, I’m always willing to experiment with new technologies to better tell a story.”
