Is The End of Claymont Steel at Hand?

Evraz Claymont Steel emissions have been a source of irritation for local residents for some time. DNREC has heard from them at several public meetings. Since DNREC is an agency with incredible inertia, the residents have been testing the dust in and around their homes for some time.

Global Community Monitor (www.gcmonitor.org), an international environmental justice group, that has been training members of the Claymont Coalition to take air samples of emissions from Evraz Claymont Steel detailed the preliminary findings at a Community Meeting, November 15th. The results, though not scientific in the sense of data collection Rigeur, are available here and look damning to Claymont Steel.

DNREC has cited Claymont Steel for this kind of pollution in the past, and in fact, has gotten quite irate about the company’s refusal to work with the regulator. The Company has still not performed compliance operations they agreed to over two years ago.

DNREC has issued “shut down or clean up” letters and yet still has not closed the facility. This is reminiscent of the treatment afforded to the NRG Coal Plant downstate. The worry is that DNREC is all bark and no bite. If they continue like this it will take a very serious demonstration of intent to restore credibility to the natural resource regulator in Delaware. If the Markell administration intends to rehabilitate DNREC, they may come down hard on Evraz Claymont Steel, or somebody else.
