Hagley Creek Kids Request Donations for Paws and People Assisting Wounded Warriors (PpaWWs)
Hagley Creek Kids, high school students participating in a volunteer youth leadership program, are partnering with Paws and People Assisting Wounded Warriors (PpaWWs), to raise awareness of the challenges wounded veterans face today during their July 17 and 22 program. PPAWW is a nonprofit who provides Service Dogs to Wounded Warriors who suffer from Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and mobility issues. The Creek Kids are asking for donations of leashes, dog toys, and collars at their “Black Powder” program, a kid-friendly event that will focus on military and non-military uses of black powder. Activities will be 12:30 to 4 p.m. The cost is included in museum admission.
Janet and Bill Austin, representatives from PpaWWs, will talk to visitors about the program and service dogs. Bill’s dog, JP, will also attend the event. Visitors can learn about JP’s responsibilities for Bill and the benefits of service dogs for veterans. Donations of any dog-related item will be accepted: leashes, collars, dog toys, flea and tick medicine, shampoo, and bedding are suggested.
The Creek Kids have an afternoon of activities for families. Kids can make gunpowder truffles (an edible treat) and powder kegs, discover how different colors are made for fireworks, and explore an encampment – complete with enlisting and drilling. Hagley’s signal cannon will be fired during the program.

Paws and People Assisting Wounded Warriors does not provide fully trained dogs, but rather young dogs that have passed a temperament test, been house-trained, socialized, and taught basic manners. Warriors participate in a six month program that focuses on a series of training stages and exercises for the Warrior/Dog team that both customizes the dog to the Warrior’s needs as well as providing cognitive therapy for the Warrior.
