Governor Minner Leads Delaware Delegation on Trade Mission to Chile
Delaware’s government does good things to protect and grow opportunities for state businesses worldwide. This week, Governor Ruth Ann Minner is leading a Delaware delegation on a trade mission to Chile, where the group will meet with Chilean government officials, key business partners and the board of directors from the American Chamber of Commerce Chile.
“This trip marks another strategic trade mission to enhance business opportunities and potentially generate new job growth in Delaware,” Gov. Minner said. “This trip is especially significant to the continued success of our Port of Wilmington as the key U.S. hub for the entry of Chilean fruit.”
Indeed it is. The Port of Wilmington is the nation’s leading port for imported refrigerated cargo and is a major East Coast port of entry for Chilean fruit. . In April 2005, the Diamond State Port Corp. and Pacific Delaware Inc. (PDI) signed a new five-year agreement with a two-year extension option for the storage and distribution of Chilean fruit imports through the Port of Wilmington.
From Dec. 2006 through June 1, 2007, more than 190,000 tons of fruit from Chilean ports have been discharged in Wilmington with an annual retail value of approximately $800 million. Chilean fruit generated 720 direct and indirect quality jobs in Delaware and approximately $3 million in tax revenue for the state and region.
