Delaware Tech Fiscal Year 2015 Budget Presentation to the Joint Finance Committee
On Tuesday, February 18 Delaware Technical Community College presented its Fiscal Year 2015 Operating Budget request to the Joint Finance Committee at Legislative Hall in Dover.
President Orlando J. George, Jr. updated the committee on the College’s continual commitment to provide access to higher education and connect Delawareans with jobs. The presentation highlighted College programs and initiatives developed in response to the needs of Delaware’s business and industry. These programs included an FAA-certified aviation maintenance program developed to prepare highly-skilled and sought-after graduates to work on the engine of the airplane in addition to the shell, an accelerated nursing program, and the expanded EMT/paramedic program developed in response to demand from county agencies and the Delaware State Police.
President George highlighted key partnerships, including the success of the Delaware Manufacturing Extension Partnership (DEMEP) in helping small and medium-sized manufacturers. He also spoke about a partnership with the Air National Guard that allows members to earn associate degrees from the Community College of the Air Force by fulfilling general education course requirements with Delaware Tech.
The College requested support of the Governor’s recommended budget including continued funding of the Student Excellence Equals Degree (SEED) scholarship program. In addition, the College requested a stable and reliable funding source for the nursing and allied health programs expansion and funding for five additional full-time public safety personnel and nine faculty/instructional student support positions.
In recognizing the value individuals with disabilities can bring to the workforce, the College expressed support of the Governor’s Employment First workforce development strategy. The College requested funding for a project coordinator for a pilot program to hire individuals with disabilities with the ultimate goal of expanding the program statewide
