Cromwell’s Tavern is Now Cromwell’s American Tavern & Taqueria

For the first time since November 1991, the Greenville classic known as Cromwell’s Tavern has undergone a name and format change, to become Cromwell’s American Tavern & Taqueria.

Owner Pat Nilon, recognizing the popularity of his weekly Authentic Mexican night and the foothold Mexican cuisine has in casual dining, has expanded the everyday American Tavern comfort menu to include eighteen Mexican dishes. Nachos remain on the menu, with house-made tortilla chips. Mexican additions include burritos, tacos, quesadillas, sopes, taquitos, enchiladas and fajitas, many with your choice of 2-4 protein options. Taco and fajita salads have further expanded an already-famous salad menu (named “Best Salads” in 2003 in Best of Delaware), and pork green chili joins Guinness beef stew and crab and corn chowder as year-round, every day soups. After 4pm, the dinner menu includes Carnitas, Chile Rellenos, Tomatillo Chicken, Snapper Veracruz, and Camarones a la Ajillo.

Says Nilon, “Sometimes you want enchiladas and a top shelf margarita, and your better half wants a world-class burger and a robust Malbec; and you both want spicy buffalo chicken winglets. Now, you don’t have to compromise.”

Chef Michael Mullen collaborated with Nilon to incorporate customer favorites from Authentic Mexican nights, worked in some new dishes, and also listened to the advice of the kitchen staff, to ensure the menu was not only approachable, but also incorporated some authentic traditions.

Adds Nilon, “The reliable comfort of Cromwell’s is a huge appeal to our neighbors and regulars. We like to think of menu changes as evolution—rather than revolution—and our customers have responded to the American/Mexican pairing exactly as we’d hoped…fearlessly.”

Fried Mac and Cheese remains on the menu as a Cromwell’s staple, panko-crusted with house marinara. In-house smoked brisket can be found throughout the American and Mexican menus: as French Dip, as sliders, and in nachos, burritos and enchiladas. There’s plenty of seafood on the menu and crab cakes may never depart from the Cromwell’s menu. Specials, like half-price wine on Monday nights (by the glass or bottle), $5 Patron margaritas on Wednesday nights, and half-priced burgers on Sundays, remain in tact.

Cromwell’s American Tavern & Taqueria is open 7 days a week for lunch, dinner and late night; visit www.cromwellstavern.com for summer hours.
