Back to Basics K-12 Private School Certified by SEVP to Accept International Students

Back to Basics K-12 Private School, Delaware’s only Department of Education-approved 1-on-1 private school, was recently certified by the Federal Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), a division of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to accept international students for high school.

“This is an exciting development for the entire Back to Basics K-12 Private School,” explains Director Beverly Stewart, M.Ed. “The ability to interact on a daily basis with students from many countries, with different backgrounds, cultures and experiences will enrich the school experience for all of our students. The 1-on-1 style of teaching is tailor-made for the student transitioning to a new country and learning the language and customs.”

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program provides international students with the unique opportunity to study in the US at certified schools. Graduating seniors from schools like Back to Basics K-12 Private School typically continue on to American colleges and universities.

The initial idea to apply for certification for Back to Basics K-12 Private School was born after Stewart traveled abroad last year to exhibit at the annual CIEET Conference in China. The conference, which was held in numerous cities over several weeks (Stewart exhibited in Beijing and Shanghai), is recognized as the most influential international education expo. CIEET annually attracts over 60,000 visitors planning to study overseas. Over 500 universities from 40+ countries worldwide exhibit.

Upon returning to the U.S., the opportunity was evaluated to ensure that it fit within the school’s education model. “We felt that when international students make the transition to U.S. schools, the path should be smoothed as much as possible. Even if a student speaks and reads English fairly well, taking courses in a foreign language is a new – and often difficult – experience. The 1-on-1 student to teacher ratio at Back to Basics Private School eases the student in, so that the language difference is not quite so overwhelming.” Also, at Back to Basics the foreign students must take a credit of ESL (English as a Second Language) their first year, as one of their requirements for attending.

The certification process, an arduous process which took 14 months to complete, is mandatory for any school that wants to accept international students. To ensure that the international students receive an exceptional education experienced in the United States, the process examines every area of the school. Certification included physical inspection of school properties and facilities, evaluation of qualified personnel, documentation of licensing, plus scrutinizing everything from grading policy, admission requirements, expulsion requirements to attendance policy. Back to Basics Private School was able to meet the rigorous standards and eagerly anticipates welcoming their first international students.
