AN ACT TO AMEND TITLE 30 OF THE DELAWARE CODE RELATING TO THE PERSONAL INCOME TAX
I’m not a political blogger, but I feel the need to draw attention to this issue since it should be important to all Delawareans no matter where you stand on the matter:
Senate Bill # 312 proposes to the personal income tax by establishing a new 7.95% bracket on taxable income in excess of $150,000.
I consider myself to be a typical constituent, and I have what are probably some pretty universal feelings about taxes. Simply put, I don’t like tax increases. Who does? I feel this way simply on principal; even if the proposed tax increase doesn’t affect me personally (and they usually don’t). To me, increasing taxes is the equivalent of throwing your hands in the air and giving up.
Increasing taxes is an excuse to not make the tough choices that all politicians need to make.
If there is a budget deficit, by its very nature, doesn’t that indicate that there is a problem with the budget? If any other individual in the nation has a problem with their personal household budget, they need to cut spending- “raising taxes” (or getting a pay increase from their employer) is simply not they typical option.
I’m not suggesting that cutting spending by any measure is easy. I’m merely suggesting that this is what any citizen needs to do when the going gets tough.
Why should our government be any different?
