2011 DE Numbers Bee – 9th Annual Tournament

Learning Math in a Fun Way!

Event: 2011 DE Numbers Bee – 9th Annual Tournament
on May 14th A.I dupont High School, Greenville, DE 19807

The Wall Street Journal reported in October, 2009 that less than 40% of the nation’s fourth graders are proficient in math.

While we hear a lot about poor math skills, the curriculum for math education hasn’t changed a lot over the years, and math scores have seemed more resistant to change than reading scores. In fact, Delaware’s state math scores for 2009 are below the national average (2) and have decreased slightly since 2007. Sakthi & Kamatchi Vel has taken this issue on personally, instituting a Numbers Challenge in 2003 and expanding it to a National Numbers Bee.

If our kids can start learning math in a fun and immersive environment, like the way they learn foreign languages, they can’t help but improve and succeed. The use of Numbers Bee program has improved students’ numerical, communication, computational, and problem-solving skills. It has also been an effective teaching tool in attracting students who are discouraged by non-technological approaches to mathematics.

Teachers have reported that the game is challenging and stimulating for children at all levels. “Numbers Bee has been an asset in my classroom,” wrote one teacher in the Talented and Gifted Program. “Not only does it increase the student’s mental math skills, it is geared to many different levels of instruction. Students of all instructional levels felt successful using the game.”

National Bee Inc., a Delaware Non-Profit organization, plans to run the 9th Annual Numbers Bee in 2011. Numbers Bee is a tournament for Delaware students in Grades 3 – 8. It is scheduled to be conducted in May 14, 2011 at AI dupont High School, Greenville, DE 19807.
